Written by E Haryadi - Translated by Stephanie A. Surya While the meeting between United States (US) and European Union (EU) facing a dead-end, Nobel Prize Winner, Al Gore, within his an hour speech, reminded everyone to not lose hope. He believed that America will change and finally will sign Kyoto Protocol. In the beginning of his speech, Al Gore admitted that he was concerned to hear Bali Roadmap, which will be used as a roadmap for the next discussion in Denmark in 2009, might fail. And all of these are because US insisted on refusing to sign 25-40% emission reduction by 2020.“In here I talk personally… I talk as the first man, who, for 30 years was spending time on this issue…I talk as US citizen..,” he said. “I am going to speak an inconvenient truth. My own country, the United States, is principally responsible for obstructing progress here in Bali,” he underlined. However, Al Gore said, we could respond to US stubbornness in two ways. First, by feeling angry and frustration with George Bush Junior’s government, which have family background oil corporation in Texas. Or, he added, we can make a second choice, move forward and do all of the difficulty work that needs to be done. Moreover, there are still two more years before 2009, the deadline for new agreement post-Kyoto Protocol in 2012. “Believe me, America will act differently than now, and you all have to anticipate that,” he said. “140 days from now there will be new president in United States,” he said. And with that new president, Al Gore confidently said, US position will be totally different. US Senate even have expressed their readiness in ratifying Kyoto Protocol. Few states in US have implemented Kyoto Protocol policies, including the corporation in it. Therefore, Al Gore is optimistic. “United States is going to change,” he underlined this. One of the examples quoted by Al Gore to ground his optimistic view is the development in Australia. According to him, two months ago, Australia under John Howard still insisted to refuse signing Kyoto Protocol. “Look what happened, Kevin Rudd as new Prime Minister, yesterday directly ratify Kyoto Protocol,” he added. Therefore Al Gore certain, with new president leading federal government, US will ratify Kyoto Protocol |
