Written by Firdaus Cahyadi - Translated by Stephanie A. Surya No wonder if civil societies around the world are angry with World Bank’s movements. In the High-Level Plenary Session CMP 3 and COP 13 today (12/12), World Bank President made use of time to promoting World Bank’s debt offers. “I want to show you World Bank’s commitment on assisting the developing country to reach economic growth and environment protection,” said World Bank President, Robert B. Zoelick in his speech.According to him, World Bank has integrated adaptation and mitigation as the core in each of their debt projects. “Now we want to help the changing of nation development paradigm, which based on low-carbon emission growth and adaptation towards new risk of climate change,” he stated. Other than that, World Bank is going to provide new debt to facilitate low-carbon investment and related to adaptation, either from the government or privates. “We are the pioneer for market development and carbon trading mechanism,” he stated. Zoelick confidently said that their new debt project, Carbon Forest Partnership Facility (CFPF) launched Tuesday (11/12) would be able to help the society surrounding forest and local indigenous society. World Bank’s claim that their project would benefit the indigenous society was doubted by activist from Debt Watch Indonesia. In their position paper, Debt Watch Indonesia mentioned that World Bank Group ever distributed money to Freeport in Papua, which have problems with ecology and indigenous society. Zoelick’s bravery to promote debt projects is signaling that UNFCCC in Bali has been hijacked by World Bank’s interest. “World Bank have the power to influence and, even, hijack the agenda of international meetings including in this UNFCCC,” said Bank Information Center Indonesia activist, Nadia Hadad in a discussion in Kampung CSF few days earlier. Meanwhile, according to Hanni from Indonesian Civil Society Forum (CSF) for Climate Justice, World Bank’s bravery in promoting their debts in UNFCCC show that climate change issue has been a new kind of debt trap. “Debt from World bank is not solution of climate change,” she said. |
